Geology Compass
Kompas Geologi Brunton 5010
Our commitment to our roots continues with the GEO, the newest and most advanced transit we build. Listening to owners of our pocket transits, and implementing some of their ideas, we have created the ultimate tool for professionals.
Our billeted aluminum, waterproof GEO Transit contains a fast, magnetic north seeking, rare-earth magnet, balanced on a sapphire jewel bearing for quick measurements.
The most noticeable feature is the hinge inclinometer, accurate to +/- 2 degrees. This feature allows simultaneous trend and plunge measurements reducing the number of measurements you must take in the field.
An innovative needle design can be locked or unlocked depending on your requirements. The compass also takes vertical angle measurements to +/- 90 percent (or 100 percent grade), with 5-percent grade scale increments. And users needn't worry about imprecise results, as the compass's vertical and azimuth readings are accurate to within +/- 1/2 degree (with 1-degree graduations and 10-minute readability for both).
Additional features include "Buck Horn" style sights for increased accuracy, a single NdFeB magnet that resists demagnetization better than other magnets, a cover hinge assembly designed for increased durability, a precision-aligned mirror with convenient "see-through" sighting capability, and magnetic declination adjustment with east and west declination settings to 180 degrees.
The Geo Pocket Transit, which boasts a 0-to-360-degree scale and comes with an attractive leather case, measures 3.62 by 2.81 by 1.31 inches (W x H x D)
A. Round Level
For accurate azimuth measurement, dip direction and trend measurements, center the bubble in the round level.
B. Needle
The needle is attached to a rare earth magnet which is induction damped, which allows the needle to seek magnetic north and come to a complete rest in a minimum amount of time, without accuracy degradation.
C. Graduated Circle
In combination with the needle, the 1° graduated circle allows for azimuth readings that are accurate to 1/2 degree.
D. Long Level
The long level for inclination measurement. For accurate inclination measurement, center the bubble in the long level using the vernier adjustment.
E. Rare Earth Magnet
Brunton has incorporated a cast NdFeB, rare-earth magnet which seeks magnetic north very quickly and allows for faster needle settling.
F. Zero Pin
The zero pin is the pointer used for magnetic declination adjustment. If no adjustment is necessary, the pin should point at 0° on the azimuth ring.
G. Needle Release Mechanism- 2 Positions
Unlocked: When needle locking adjustment is unlocked the needle swings freely, even when the needle release mechanism is pressed.
Locked: When needle locking adjustment is in the locked position the needle is locked in place until the needle release mechanism is pressed.
H. Vernier
The vernier is used for inclination measurements with an accuracy to 30 minutes.
I. Mirror
Located on the inside cover, the mirror and mirror center line are used for accurate azimuth measurements, when using the transit as a prismatic compass. (Note: The image in the mirror is of the ceiling of our shop)
J. Small Sight
Attached to the cover, the small "buckhorn" style sight is used for precise bearing and inclination sighting.
K. Large Sight with Peep Sight
The large sight and the attached "buckhorn" style peep sight are used for precise azimuth measurement.
L. Ball and Socket Tripod Mount
The slots on both sides of the body are for mounting to an optional Brunton tripod.
M. Magnetic Declination Adjustment Screw
Adjust the GEO Transit for magnetic declination, by turning the declination adjustment screw using a flat head screwdriver
N. Vernier Adjustment
Use the vernier adjustment to adjust the vernier and long level for inclination measurements.
O. Needle Locking Adjustment
Adjust the needle locking lever to lock and unlock the needle.
P. Side/Bottom Long Levels:
When it is not possible to view the round level, use side/bottom, long levels to level the GEO transit for azimuth and inclination measurement.
Q. Hinge Inclinometer:
Measure inclination using the lid and at least one of the three bubbles.
